Future teachers excel at Educators Rising State Conference

Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools’ Teaching Professions Satellite Program, located at Gahanna-Jefferson Public Schools’ Clark Hall, sent students to the recent Educators Rising State Conference at Capital University with many students placing in the top five in competitions and advancing on to the national conference in Washington, D.C., this June. 


Students who placed in the top five include:

  • 3rd place in CDA Weekly Lesson: McKenzie Ruffin (Groveport Madison); 

  • 5th place in Pre-K Children’s Literature: Jalynn Johnson (Gahanna Lincoln);

  • 1st place in Pre-K Children’s Literature: Anneke Keesing (Gahanna Lincoln) and Cami Weldon (Gahanna Lincoln);

  • 3rd place in K-3 Children’s Literature: Thalia Johnson (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 1st place in Creative Lecture: Angelina Harmon (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 5th place in Public Speaking: Rachel Bolumen (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 3rd place in Lesson Planning Arts: Janaya Davis (Groveport Madison)

  • 3rd place in Lesson Planning CTE: Tyler Howard (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 5th place in Lesson Planning Humanities: Connor Tilton (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 2nd place in Lesson Planning Humanities: Hannah Dickerson (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 5th place in Lesson Planning STEM: Kayla Ferguson (Reynoldsburg)

  • 3rd place in Lesson Planning STEM: Katie Merickel (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 3rd place in Ethical Dilemma: Jalynn Johnson, Logan Prater, Nadia Skolnick, and Angelina Harmon (all from Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 1st place in Inside Our Schools: Aubree Packer, Esperenza Reyes, Anesha Ward, and Kieran VanVorhis (all from Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 3rd place in Impromptu Speaking: Anesha Ward (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 2nd place in Impromptu Lesson: Danny Whipp (Gahanna Lincoln)

  • 3rd place in Researching Learning Challenges: Kayla Ferguson (Reynoldsburg), Meghan Mertz (Canal Winchester) and Janaya Davis (Groveport Madison.

Students who had top 10 finishes include:

  • Arlenie Cruz (Gahanna Lincoln)- Creative Lecture

  • Cooper Solomon (Gahanna Lincoln) - Educators Rising Moment

  • Logan Prater (Gahanna Lincoln) - Job Application and Interview

  • Haley Schmidt (Gahanna Lincoln)- Exploring Non-Core Teaching Subjects

  • Ava Smith (Gahanna Lincoln) – Exploring Non-Core Teaching Subjects

  • Cody Bowles (Gahanna Lincoln) - Impromptu Speaking

  • Alexis Bush, Megan Gifford, and Katie Merickel (all from Gahanna Lincoln) - Researching Learning Challenges

  • Ashton Akers and Caitlyn Hicks (Gahanna Lincoln)- Chapter Display

In addition, the Eastland-Fairfield Educators Rising Chapter earned Honors Chapter designation for both the Junior and Senior Chapters. Two students were elected to serve as state officers in the Ohio Educators Rising in 2020-2021. Cami Weldon (Gahanna Lincoln) will serve as Vice President of Programs and Public Relations and Megan Gifford (Gahanna Lincoln) will serve as Vice President of Community Service and Competitions.


The following students presented breakout sessions during the state conference and will do so again at the national conference in Washington, D.C.

  • “Embrace Your Ace”- Morgan Gunther (New Albany), Katie Merickel (Gahanna Lincoln), Cody Bowles (Gahanna Lincoln);

  • “Growing Your Classroom”- Kieran VanVorhis, Anesha Ward, Esperanza Reyes, Aubree Packer (all from Gahanna Lincoln)
