Calamity Day Procedures

What is a Calamity Day?

A calamity day is any day in which a school has canceled classes for any of the following reasons:

  • Hazardous weather conditions (snow, cold, excessive conditions)

  • Transportation issues

  • Health concerns

How many Calamity Days can there be in a year?

Eastland-Fairfield has built six (6) calamity days into the 2023-24 school calendar. If there is a need for a seventh (or more), we will follow the following Board-approved action stated on the 23-24 calendar.

“As required by law, the Eastland-Fairfield District has designated that days missed will be made up on weekday(s) beginning May 30 and ending when all days have been made up. The "teacher workday" will be scheduled the weekday following the last student "in session" day.”

When will the decision on initiating a Calamity Day be made?

All efforts will be made to make a decision to initiate a calamity day by 6:00 a.m. ET on the day in question. A decision could be made and the protocol initiated prior to 6:00 a.m. and as early as the day before.

Afternoon/evening adult learning programs will be notified by 2:00 p.m. ET on the day in question.

Basic Police Officer Training (BPOT) adult learners will be contacted directly by Commander Tim Voris in addition to Eastland-Fairfield's communications.

Where can I find information on if EFCTS will be closed?

Students, parents, and guardians can find information on school closure in any of the following ways:

What does a cancellation mean for satellite students?
Students of an Eastland-Fairfield satellite program are to adhere to the decision of the school hosting their program.

If Eastland-Fairfield is open but the school hosting their program is closed, students DO NOT report.

If Eastland-Fairfield is closed but the school hosting their program is open, students REPORT.

What if my home school is closed but Eastland-Fairfield remains open?
If your student’s home school is closed due to a calamity day, your student’s absence or tardiness is excused. If EFCTS remains open and it is safe to do so, they may still attend classes at Eastland-Fairfield. This also applies to students who are participating in off-site, work-based learning opportunities.

If your student's home school is closed, transportation typically provided by the home school to the career centers will not be available.

If your home school remains open, your student’s absence or tardiness will not be excused unless their absence/tardy is for a legitimate reason and you report to the school via the attendance line.

What if my student's home school is open but Eastland-Fairfield is closed?
In this scenario, if your student takes their academic and lab at an Eastland-Fairfield campus, the student will not report to school.

If, in this scenario, your student takes their academic courses at their home school (which is open) they will still report to their home school to fulfill their academic coursework but will not report to their lab program at Eastland-Fairfield.

What does a cancellation mean for students participating in a WBL experience?
Students who are participating in work-based learning opportunities during the school day will not be required to report to the job site location if Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools has closed due to inclement weather. Students may choose to report to the job site if traveling conditions are safe. In either case, the student is responsible for notifying their job site supervisor.
