Bioscience Students Present Capstone Projects, Scholarship Winners Announced

The students and staff of the Eastland-Fairfield Career & Technical Schools Bioscience satellite program celebrated their 10th annual capstone project presentation event in mid-February, where senior students shared projects displaying the culmination of knowledge obtained in the program. Three students were selected to receive scholarships for their exceptional work.

A total of 19 students presented their capstone projects to a host of local judges that included alumni, community leaders, academic researchers, and professionals in related fields. All projects were evaluated and the top three were selected to receive scholarships, generously donated by the Gahanna Rotary, which totaled $1,750. 

The top three projects selected by the panel of judges included: 

First Place: Frankie Nuss (Gahanna Lincoln), Apple Cider Vinegar Dilutions as Inhibitors of Staphylococcus aureus

Second Place: Aiden Walz (Gahanna Lincoln), Differences in Concentration of Microplastics in Farm-Raised vs. Wild-Caught White Shrimp

Third place: Stella Brofford (Gahanna Lincoln), The Effect of Propylene Glycol on the Heart Rate of Daphnia magna

The Bioscience capstone project is an independent experiment that each student carries out during class time at their high school, or while visiting a mentor at their facilities. Students can work with a mentor, or totally on their own. They can get as creative as they want within the parameters of working in a secondary school setting, and will typically spend 3-6 months total on the project.

Bioscience is a two-year, Eastland-Fairfield satellite program that is housed at Gahanna Lincoln High School, inside Clark Hall. The program uses a research- and experiment-based curriculum to educate students in the areas of bio-engineering, microbiology, molecular biology, and other related fields.
